Rubens and his Legacy

This exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts aims to show the influence of Peter Paul Rubens on artists from the 17th century up to the present day. By means of thematic displays, Rubens' subject matter and revolutionary style are revealed to be significant to a broad range of great artists.

I felt that the show would be improved by the inclusion of a few more significant paintings by Rubens himself.

Recommended Exhibitions to see over Christmas

I am hoping to find time over the Christmas holidays to go to the following art exhibitions:

  • William Morris: Anarchy & Beauty
is on at the National Portrait Gallery until 11th January. The exhibition explores the life and ideas of the great Victorian artist William Morris. Through portraits, personal items and fascinating objects, many of which are on public display for the first time, this major exhibition illustrates Morris’s concept of 'art for the people' and highlights the achievements of those that he inspired.
  • Constable: The Making of Master
is on at the V&A until 11th January and the show includes his full-scale oil sketches in addition to his finished paintings.

Rembrandt Exhibition

Don't miss the Rembrandt: The Late Works' Exhibition in the Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery. It is running until the 18th January, daily from 10am to 6pm (late night on Fridays to 9pm).

You will need to book tickets from the National Gallery website - click here

Mr Turner

I thoroughly recommend that you go and see the film 'Mr Turner', if you haven't already been. It's a wonderful, moving portrayal of Turner's eccentric, strong and difficult character, his complicated love life and close relationship with his father. It is shot beautifully with scenes recreating his pictures, showing the emotional inspiration for his work and gives an insight into the art world and huge industrial changes of Victorian London.
